Soracom and Otsuka Leveraged IoT and GenAI to Develop a Warehouse Intrusion Detection System

Soracom and Otsuka Warehouse, a company providing high-quality logistics services for pharmaceuticals, food, and more, jointly developed a warehouse intrusion detection system utilizing cameras and generative AI to improve warehouse safety and maintain the quality of operations.

Otsuka Warehouse recognized the value in using generative AI as a mechanism for detecting unauthorized intruders. The new intrusion detection system periodically captures still images using warehouse cameras, and when the GenAI detects a situation that could be related to an unauthorized intruder, it notifies warehouse management in a timely manner.

The company adopted Soracom’s IoT platform and Soracom Flux service that enables low-code development of IoT applications. As a result of utilizing Soracom Flux and Google Gemini, the joint development team rapidly developed an advanced intrusion detection system using generative AI and began the Proof-of-Concept in just one month.

Through Soracom Flux detailed conditions are passed to the AI model. In the case of Otsuka Warehouse’s needs, they included conditions that contained “clothing” and “whether or not a helmet is worn,” and this was easily rewritten in natural language. As a result, conventional surveillance cameras can generate camera footage and analyze it using AI to enhance warehouse safety. The company can also visualize and centrally manage logistics sites across the country in real time from its Tokyo headquarters.

According to Kiyoshi Sekiya, Chief Technology Officer, Technology Division, Otsuka Warehouse Co., Ltd., “The reason we chose to use generative AI this time is that it allows us to flexibly change the detection conditions passed to the generative AI using natural language. In fact, we can change and add detailed parameters on the management screen, allowing for flexible adjustments to suit the situation, and we believe that it can also be expanded to applications beyond detecting unauthorized intruders. We will continue to use advanced technology to solve problems in the warehouse industry.”
